Need a new work visa but passport is currently being renewed.

My current Z type may run out before my new passport arrives. I am currently in China legally but what happens if my new UK passport does not arrive by the time that Z type expires? My current passport doesn't actually expire until June but it didn't have six months left on it to acquire the new visa.

Do I need an emergency document of some kind? HELP! :(
