Can I bring a small instrument plus carry-on on a domestic flight?

I am flying from Shanghai to Nanning and would like to bring a small instrument (ukulele) with my carry-on item. If I brought it, would I be allowed to have another small carry-on item? I am flying economy.

According to the policy you can take only one piece of carry-on luggage and the instrument need to go with checked luggage. But since ukulele is small in size, you can try to discuss with the airport staff (like the safty problem). Some people did it successfully. But to be safe, you'd better go to the airport early to leave enough time for the process.
