About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From USA to Japan to Shanghai to Hong Kong

I am a US citizen. If I leave from USA and stop in Japan first for a week, then fly to Shanghai and from there to Hong Kong, do I qualify for 72 hour visa free stay in Shanghai?
Thank you

Yes, you can enjoy the 72 hour free stay in Shanghai as long as you get the onward air ticket for HongKong and the layover time is no more than 72 hours.
