About:Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles

Do I need a Visa to fly from USA to China for leisure travel

My daughter is US Citizen but lives in China. She is teaching English with a work Z type. I plan on visiting her and staying at her apartment in Beijing for 10 days for a small vacation. Do I need a permit? I also would not have confirmed flights on an airline because I work for American Airlines and I would be traveling standby.

You need one and you are suggested to apply for a single entry Tourist L for visiting your daughter.

For your situation, you are suggested to ask your daughter to write you an invitation letter for the application, so that the flight tickets and hotel bookings in China are not needed.

What exactly does this invitation letter from my daughter have to include? Is there a particular format that it needs to be in?

The invitation letter should include: (1) information of you (full name, gender, date of birth, etc.); (2) information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, etc.); (3) information of your daughter (name, contact telephone number, address, your daughter's signature).

There is no specific format requirement for the letter. I think you daughter can write it in the way as normal invitation letters.
