Yes, you need to apply for a L type in advance before you go to Guangzhou to join the wedding. It requires your passport, completed application form, a recent six months passport size photo, round-trip air tickets and hotel booking orders.

Hi Heidi
I'm confused. Why would Emma require an L visa if she's only in Guangzhou for 48 hours? I'm in a similar position and flying to Guangzhou tonight!
Thanks
T.

If Emma goes back to Thailand after the wedding, the free transit policies are not applicable to her, so she has to apply for an L type. However, if she has bought air ticket for Canada or countries and regions other than mainland China and Thailand, and she will go to the next destination after the wedding, she may be eligible for the 72 hour free transit. Only all the conditions are met, can she enter Guangzhou without an entry permit.

It depends on how she arranged her itinerary. If she flies from Thailand to Guangzhou and then back to Thailand, she can't be able to make use of 72 hours free transit. If she flies from Thailand and go to other rather regions like HK or Macau before she flies back to Thailand, she is eligible for 72 hours free transit.
