About:Top 8 Reasons Why Your China Visa Gets Rejected

Cancelling a Chinese Work Visa

I previously worked in China but had to return to the United States suddenly due to illness. I didn't get my work Z cancelled before I left. Will this affect my ability to return on a tourist L? And do I have to wait until my current work Z expires before I apply for the tourist L?

You mean your work permit was not cancelled or your resident permit was not cancelled?
If your work permit was not cancelled, it will not affect your application for L type. If your resident permit is not cancelled, it may affect your new application. You can consult the embassy/consulate for more information.
