About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Do I need a visa to Shanghai from Canada?

I plan to purchase a round trip ticket to Shanghai from Dec 8-Dec 22. I plan to stay at least 5 days in Shanghai before travelling to Taipei and Hong Kong for the remainder of the trip and then going back to shanghai on Dec 21 to catch my flight back home to Canada the next day. Do I require a Transit G type? If so, this is a last minute trip so I'm not sure if I am able to get my permit in time before I leave. Am I able to get one when I arrive in Shanghai?

Hi, you need to have a single entry Tourism L in advance for your first trip for Shanghai from Dec 8, so you need to apply in advance.

For the trip from HK or Taipei to Shanghai on Dec 21 and then back to Canada on Dec 22, no Transit G type is needed. You can enjoy the 72-hour free transit for this journey. You just need to tell the airline that you want to enjoy this policy when you board the flight at HK or Taipei.
