Is it possible for me to get my visa extended and where do I do so?

I am an American passport holder and I have a flight on the 29th of december from Guilin, to Guangzhuo, to California, but mine expires on the 20th of december. Or, is it possible to leave and stay in HK then fly from HK to Guilin, without having it?
