my friendi have a 12 hour layover in beijing on the way to sydney

Aus. We want to be able to leave the airport and sight see in Beijing for around 5 hours. Do we need a transit visa to do this?

Since the layover is just 12 hours, no Transit G is required. You can just apply for a stay permit at th airport to leave for the city downtown area for sightseeing.
