About:Traveling Cost in China

advise in travelling from manila to xian in january 2015

Hello, we are a group of 6 faculty members from the Philippines who will be joining a conference in Xian on January 8-10, 2015. Which would be the cheapest route to take from Manila to Xian? Would trains be a better mode of transport than planes in terms of cost and comfort? Please advise. We also want to see China even just for two days before returning to the Philippines. Thank you.

Marian, I think you may fly from Manila to Xian directly. There is no need to fly to Guangzhou or somewhere and then take trains to Xian. The cost is almost the same. Which city are you going visit before you get back?

Then taking a train from Beijing to Xian is a good idea. I think you should take T or Z trains. The prices for hard berth and soft berth is from CNY 280 to 420. High speed trains are faster. However, the ticket prices are over CNY 500.

If you come to Beijing for the first time, Forbidden City and Great Wall are two musts. If you are interested in Hutongs, you may go to Houhai Area and have a short trip to visit Hutongs. Then you might visit Summer Palace. It takes around half a day.

we would like to see Beijing first before proceeding to Xian. I scouted for domestic flights from Beijing to Xian but the prices are so expensive that is why we consider taking the train instead. Would that be a sound plan? What train should we take and what should be the places we need to see in Beijing considering the short time (only 2-3 days).
