If you plan to apply for a L type, you need to provide resident permit for employment or study there because you are an American now. Otherwise, you should apply from Chinese embassy or consulate in the USA. Other required documents are the same, round trip air tickets and hotel reservation or an invitation letter except for your passport, filled application form and a recent passport photo.
