tourist visa for backpacking? what do we need for requirements?

Hello, A friend and I (I am canadian and she is australian), want to come to china to backpack for 2 months. Starting from Xi'an and then picking our route along the way. We will have no hotels booked beforehand.

In order to apply for a L type, you need to provide an invitation letter if you don't have return air ticket and hotel reservation. If you have any friend in China, you may ask them to send you an invitation letter in order to apply for a L type.
