Then I plan to take the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui area.  Will I be able to then take the airport express back from the Kowloon station?

Do you buy the same day return ticket? If so, you can only take the airport express in the station in accordance with the station you choosed when you buy the ticket. So I'm afraid you cannot go back to the airport from Kowloon Station.
