Can citizens of USA get a visa for China at the Chinese embassy in KL, Malaysia?

Renee, normally those who apply in a third country must provide their residence permit for employment or study, or any other kind of legal status there. I think you may contact CVASC in Kuala Lumpur to confirm this.
