24 hour direct transit exemption

If I stay at a hotel near the airport, does the 24-hr transit exemption apply for a US passport holder? It says that it is valid if one stays in the specified transit area. Does it mean within the airport or is there an area that includes hotels near the airport? Thanks

The 24-hour free transit policy is available for USA passport holder. So you can leave the airport for a hotel.
