Susie, you may bring some gifts when you visit your Chinese friend's home for the first time. They will be happy though they tell you that it's not necessary to bring gifts. And I am not sure if you will have a meal with them at home. If so, you should learn some Chinese table manners. For example, you shouldn't talk when your mouth is full of food. The host sometimes may refill your bowl with their chopsticks because they hope that you can eat more dishes. If you are not used to this, you may say "I can do it. Thank you." If you are full, you can tell them honestly. Otherwise, they may continuously ask you to eat more or refill your bowl. After you finish the meal, you may praise them, for example, saying "the food is good or delicious". I am sure that the host will be happy to hear this.
