I'm starting my trip in Beijing. Where can I get a chip for my mobile phone to make local calls?

You can take your passport to those business offices of China Mobile, Unicom, or Telecom to get a SIM card (perhaps u will be granted a new number). With that, you can make international and domestic calls.
