About:Chinese Etiquette

I will visit a friend & his wife in Beijing. What would be an appropriate gift to bring them?

i will be staying with them for about a week, and I will go to my friend's school with him. He is a teacher. I will interact with students and teachers. What should I bring them on arrival. i would like to take them to dinner and pay for some things, as sightseeing can be expensive. Also, should I give them a parting gift? Thank you.

Marie, I remembered that my foreign teacher once sent each of us some candies and chocolate at our first meeting. Of course they are made in USA. For your friend and his wife, you may bring her wife cosmetics, lipstick, perfume etc. For your friend, a lighter and cigarette and wine should be ok if he smokes and drinks.

When visiting a home, it is customary to bring fresh fruit, so you should include that as well.

Thank you. I would love to bring them fresh fruit, but I am afraid that customs from USA to Canada to China would not allow. Perhaps something like fresh fruit, some preserves or dried fruit would also work.
Thank you again,

Marie

Thank you for your suggestions. I appreciate them. My friend does not smoke, and my own culture, (USA) says that gifts of perfume or cosmetics are very personal gifts. I will ask about traveling with wine on international flights.
