Train from Shanghai to Hong Kong

I wanted to get to Hong Kong by rail but was told when I went to purchase tickets at Shanghai station I was told that the trains were full until 3rd October! Is there another route to Hong Kong apart from the 18hour direct train? Thank you in advance.

You can try to connect at Guangzhou, from Shanghai to Guangzhou and then from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. Also, it would be better if you check for the ticket availbility first. You can use this website for searching.
