what kind of visa required for making transfering in Kunming airport

My son has 20 hours layover at Kunming and is entitled to hotel stay by airlines. What kind does he need to apply for. He is an Indian travelling from Canada and India and back.

Since he only stay for 20 hours (no more than 24 hours), he does not need to apply any time for making the transfer. He just need to apply for a stay permit at the airport to leave the airport.
