About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need a Visa travelling from US to Shanghai then to Seoul, then back to US?

I am a US citizen and I will stay in Shanghai for less than 72 hours.

If so, you do not need one. You can apply for a stay permit at the immigration in the airport to leave the airport for sightseeing.
