Do I need a visa to change planes in Shanghai?

I am US citizen flying from Thailand to the USA with a change of plane in Shanghai do I need any visa or other paperwork to change planes.

Bill, if you transit less than 72 hours, you needn't apply a visa in advance because you are eligible for 72 hours free transit in Shanghai.
