Visa to China for an American abroad

I will be going to Shanghai for 1 week to visit a friend, who is a Chinese National, so I will be staying at her home in Shanghai rather than a hotel. What do I all need in order to apply for a single entry one to China in Phnom Penh, and holding an American passport?

Sam, you needn't provide return air ticket and hotel booking if your firend can send you an invitation with a copy of her ID card. Then you can apply for a L type with your passport, completed application form, a recent passport photo and the invitation letter. When you arrive, you'd better register at local PSB with your friend in 24 hours.
