About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

72 hour clarify

Just so I understand this correctly - the 72 hour transit permit covers from the moment you get your pass. All I will have to do is show my travel tickets/itinerary and passport to my airline and they will assist in me obtaining this transit permit.

Also, the 72 hour window doesn't start with arrival and departure flight times; the window starts when I receive my transit permit. I am traveling from Tokyo to Beijing then to Washington, DC; arrival in Beijing at 1:20 pm on 9/18 and leave 6:15 on 9/21. So as long as I receive the transit permit from the airline I will be OK?

According to the rules, the 72 hours start to count from the arrival time as scheduled on your flight tickets instead of the time you get the stay permit. You just need to tell your airline that you want to enjoy this policy and they will send your information to the immigration in the airport. Upon reaching airport, you, in person, need to show your tickets and passport to the immigration officer to get the stay permit.

If you leave Beijing airport at 6:15am, you can get a stay permit from the immigration to get out of the airport. If you leave at 6:15pm, it may be hard for you get the permit at the airport. In this situation, you are suggested to consult the airline company for asking more detail information.
