You can enjoy 24-hour free transit if you enjoys an international transfering, so it is no need to apply for a transit type to roam around.

You can use your passport and your onward tickets at the immigration to get a stay permit to get out of the Beijing airport.

Thanks Berton, I read on few website that you donot need any, but also u can not leave the transit area. I am planning to meet friends in beijing in my lay over of 22 hours approx at beijing capital airport. How can I make sure about this?

From travel china guide here is - " 1. No visa is required for foreigners who hold tickets to the final destination and have booked seats on international airlines, ships, trains transiting directly through China, and will stay for less than 24 hours and do not leave the specified transit area." Thank you so much for reply.

Chitz, you should apply for a stay permit at the airport. With the stay permit, you can exit the airport and meet your friends.
