About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Cairns-Hong Kong-Chicago, will I need a visa during the 17 hour layover?

I will be traveling from Cairns to Hong Kong with a 17 layover in Hong Kong and will then take a flight from Hong Kong to Chicago. Will I be allowed to leave the Hong Kong airport during the layover? Thank you. Pete

Yes, you can leave the airport because you enjoy 90 days free stay in HK with your valid Australian passport.
