one day tour in beijing

I'd like to visit summer palace, temple of heaven and lama temple in one day. How doable is it? Can I do it using public transportation or should I hire a driver for the day?

Yes, you can cover the three spots in one day. You don’t have to hire a car for a whole day, it’s not far between each two of them, local subway trains can easily take you to all of them. Or you just take a taxi, which is also much cheaper than hiring a car.
