UK backpacking visa

I have booked return flights to Beijing, but my friends and I were planning on backpacking for 2 weeks (i.e travelling around, staying in a few hostels/overnight trains) and we want to be flexible on locations and dates. The application is asking for an itinerary and proof of reservation of accommodation - is there a way around this?

Personally speaking, I know, some hotels do not need to pay when booking, so you can book some of them for your trip to get your hotel booking confirmation. Then use them and your round trip tickets to apply your tourist one. After you get it, you can cancel your booking.

Or if you can ask any of a Chinese friend to send you an invitation letter, both of the round trip tickets and the hotel booking are not necessary.
