About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

clarification about 72-hour free transit policy

Hi there,

I am a NZ citizen travelling to beijing from Sydney. My final destination is Toronto but what I have done is paid one way fare from Syd to Beijing and have booked another fare from Beijing to Toronto. The waiting time between my flights is 19hrs. When I depart Beijing for toronto, I also have a layover in shanghai. Am i eligible for this 72 hour visa to leave beijing airport to do a tour and also is this visa valid if I decide to leave shanghai airport?

Since you will have another layover in Shanghai, your transfering is not eligible for 72-hour free transit.
I wonder how long will you stay in Shanghai? If your total transfering time (time in Beijing, flight time from Beijing to Shanghai, time in Shanghai) is no more than24 hours, you can apply for a 24-hour free transit in Beijing airport. Under th 24-hour free tansit policy, you can get a stay permit stamp on your passport and you can get out of the Beijing airport with this permit. It can also be used to leave Shanghai airport.

If it is over 24 hours, you need to apply for a transit type in advance.

one way from sydney to beijing arriving at 1am. then I booked another one way fare to leave that same day from beijing to toronto departing at 10pm. between these 2 flights there is a 20 hour gap.

layover in shanghai from beijing to toronto. layover is 12 hours.

If I am eligible for the 24 hours transit, why can't I be eligible for the 72 hour to cover both cities?

sorry, Just read that the visa only applies to one city. I'll go for the 24 hour transit one to exit beijing.

my flight situation is not exactly a transit. I've booked flights separately. I fly from sydney to beijing, thats one fare I've booked separately. Then I booked another fare from beijing to toronto. can i apply for the 24 hour free transit? The gap between the 2 flights is 21 hours. I obviously wouldn't have my boarding pass for my flight from beijing to toronto but I will have my itinerary. would this suffice?

You can still enjoy the 24-hour free transit if you can just provide your onward flight tickets.
If you do not have boarding pass, you can provide them an invoice you get after you pay for the flight tickets to Toronto.
If you only take your itinerary, it is acceptable. At the immigration, the officer will check your flight with your airline and it may cost some time.
