US Citizen going to PEK - 72 hour OK?

Hello, I hold a US passport and am planning to fly from Helsinki to PEK, stay in Beijing for 2 days, and then fly from PEK to Sydney (in all, it's a total of around 60 hours). Do I qualify for the 72 hour visa? What steps do I need to take? Request a transit permit from the airport? And check in as appropriate with my hotel? Is that pretty much it? In terms of documentation, I of course need my passport, and I assume I should have travel documentation proving I have plane tickets in and out? Will I be able to move freely around local tourist areas during my 60 hours there - I'm thinking about the Forbidden City and/or the Great Wall. A lot of questions, I know, but it seems like you know this stuff cold. Thank you so much for your help!

Yes, you are eligible for the policy. You can easily apply for a transit permit upon getting to the airport.
