Your staying is not eligible for the 72-hour free transit.
If you stay in Shanghai for less than 24 hours, you can still enjoy the 24-hour free transit. You can apply for a stay permit at the Port to leave the cruise terminal.

Thank you Bella for trying to help.
I arrive in Shanghai Airport on 2 September , stay one one in Shagahi and leave the following day the 3 of September on a cruise ship.

I still need an answer:
do i need a visa to China (I have a Canadian Passport) ? can I get it locally? in the airport? in the sea port? or I have to get it from the Chinese consulate in Toronto.

Thank you very much, for your kind help

For this situation, you need to apply for a transit one in CVSAC in Toronto. Hope it is clear this time ~
