About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I did not completely understand - do we still need to apply for some kind of permit

or is the transit automatically granted if you belong to one of the listed countries? Thanks

If you transit via those cities (except Beijing) with a stopover less than 72 hours, you have to inform the carrier airline so that they are able to email your information to the airline before landing. The free transit permit will be issued on arrival showing your passport and flight ticket for leaving. But if you transit via Beijing, the permit can be done directly on arrival at the airport.
