Do I need a visa to leave PEK airport to sleep in hotel nearby?

I am flying through Beijing on my way to Ulaan Baatar Mongolia and have a 22 hour lay-over in the airport. I would like to get a hotel room to sleep before my flight to Mongolia on China Air but am not clear if I need a visa if I leave the airport. Am I eligible for the 72-hour visa-free transit?

What is your departing place by air? If it is an international place, you are eligible for the 72h visa free transit. Under this circumstance, no visa is needed. Just put forward your demand of getting out of the airport to your airline and then you will be granted a transit permit in PEK. With the permit, you can freely stay out of city during your layover!

I am flying into PEK from the U.S.A. ( I am a U.S. citizen) and will fly into PEK)and then out of BJ on my way to Mongolia. I think your response means that I can get the 72 hour visa but I am not sure where I apply for it. Do I get it when I go through passport control at the airport when I arrive there? Please clarify this procedure for me. Thank you for your help!

Yes, you are qualified for this policy. Upon ur arrival, follow the guiding signs to find the point to apply for the transit permit. It is very easy and only takes several minutes to get a permit. Don't worry! If u have any difficult in the airport, just consult the staff.
