It's true, Tony. The man gives bride price to the woman's family and burden the wedding cost. The bride price differs from place to place. However, it seems that mother-in-law prefers to ask more money from their foregin son-in-law because many of them believe foreigners are rich.

You have no choice but pay for the wedding if you want to marry her. As for the bride price, you may negotiate with your mother-in-law. 53000 USD is too much.
