Not-touristy horseback riding in Inner Mongolia

Hi! I'm looking for a less-expensive alternative to some of the expensive travel companies. My ideal vacation is about a week biking and riding horses in Inner Mongolia. Are there places to stay overnight in the grassland? I'm not expecting a hostel, but can I stay in the grassland even if I'm not with a travel company?

I recommend you go to the Hulunbuir Grassland for horse riding. The local people charge reasonably and they are very friendly to all guests.

of course, you don't need to stay in a hotel. Get along with the herdsmen and they may invite you to stay in their tents. Or you can have your own tent to freely stay on the grassland without a travel company.

Thanks to those who replied to me, I appreciate it so much! But I still have another question....

Now I'm considering Manzhouli. Can anybody attest to its safety? I'm a strong American woman traveling alone.

Also, when riding horses, is it slow riding, or fast? Does one horse just follow another or are you free to truly run the grasslands?

Thank you!

Oh, don't worry. It is a secure city for you traveling alone and the local Zhongsu Street pedestrian should not be missed!

Surely, you cannot ride a horse in the city. Then you are advised to experience horse riding at Hulunbuir (Hailar recommended). There you can freely stay on a grassland.

It can be fast or slow. You can just hire one to freely ride on a horse as you like. The grassland is so large, so you can even let the horse to run. There is no such case that horses are one after another, just following the guide of the guide if you have good skills.
