Visa for Malaysian passport that will expire in sept 2014

I have a Nz residence permit with a Malaysian passport . My passport will be renewed in Malaysia as it will expire in sept 2014. Can I apply in Nz ? We are booked to visit china in early July . Can I use the one on my old passport and travel with that and my new passport?
