About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Will be I be allowed the 72-hour transit visa if I fly from Hong Kong - Beijing - Hong Kong?

And if not, why is departing to a third country necessary?

No, this 72 hr policy is for direct transit only. But your itineray HK -Beijing -HK is a single return trip actually.
