can you get a train from Hong Kong to Zhangjiajie and how long will it take/cost

Yes, you can, but no direct train service is available. You can take a train from Hong Hum Railway Station, HK to Guangzhou East Train Station first. Then go to Guangzhou Train Station to take a direct train to ZJJ and it takes 13-14h.

By the way, the train ticket fare from HK to Guangzhou is 195HKD per person and it costs CNY96.5-172.5 for a hard seat and CNY196.5-542.5 for a sleeper from Guangzhou to ZJJ.
