US Child Support in China- Passport Revocation

Hello, I am going to be leaving for China soon to teach English.

I owe child support to the tune of $500 a month, which I do not plan on paying from China. I plan on getting a work Z and then a residency permit. I plan on staying in China indefintely, possibly for the rest of my life. I am not currently in arrears on the child support.

I am aware of a US law called the Passport Denail Program..in which they will not give a passport to someone who is more than $2,500 in arrears. Fortunately, I already have a passport, and I'm not currently in arrears. So I shouldn't have any problem getting to China. The problem will be, after the fifth month, I will have reached $2,500 in arrears and my passport could be revoked or invalidated at that point.

My question is: How would this effect my ability to stay in China? How often does a residency permit need to be renewed? Would they check the validty of my passport at the time they renew the residency permit? Or the visa? Or does the Vuisa even need to get renewed if you have a residency permit? What other documents do I need to live indefinetely in China, and would the revocation of my passport pose any problems?

Please, I really need some advice on this topic. Also, please don't lecture me on my obligations as a father...the child will be very well provided for, and will have a great life. This thread isnt meant to debate child support or ethics...please just answer the question. Any sincere advice or knowledge on this topic would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, it is ok for you to get work Z and residence permit. But the officers will check your passport validity when you renew your residence permit, generally once a year based on your working contract. So, I am afraid that you have to leave before the permit expires.

How do they check the passport validity? If it is not expired, how will they know that the US government has revoked it?

Remember that you need to renew the temporary resident permit when it expires. When you new it, you have to show them your passport. Then they can figure out whether your passport is valid or not.

Hi Tony. I do not know if you have yet to find an answer to your problem but let me suggest one. First, you are free to travel on you passport to any country until such time as it is seized and revoked by the U.S. Department of State. If you are behind on your child support and the proper documents are filed then you passport will be revoked when you either apply for additional pages or apply for a new passport. My advice is this... If you do not wish to return to the USA then work in China as long as you can but keep an eye out for a nice Chinese girl to marry. The U.S. Embassy will issue a marriage document which is basically notarial services and will not incur the check they run when you apply for additional pages or a new passport. Once you marry your girl to are far less likely to be deported even if your passport eventually gets revoked. There are plenty of nice girls in China who would be happy to marry you and, by the way, they are far better than anything you will find back in the USA. Once you are here, the only reason you will want to return to the USA is to remind yourself of women you once thought were desirable. The USA is very serious about passport revocation these days so this is good advice and I hope it helps.
