US to HKSAR to Shanghai, will we need visa?

My children are going from the US to Hong Kong to study for a month. I believe that they will need student type. My wife and I will pick them up and stay a few days in Hong Kong before flying to Shanghai from where we will fly back to the US. Since we will stay less than 90 days in total.
