Transit Hotel/ Visa in Kunming

I have a 23 hr layover at Kunming, and would like to go to a transit hotel. I have Indian passport/ USA residency. My family has USA passport. Do I need to apply for a visa at China embassy in USA in case I want to stay in a hotel for a few hours in Kunming? I did not find a transit hotel inside the airport, but there are hotels nearby.
