Purchasing plane ticket before accepted VISA; What if I get denied and get stuck with Chinese flight

I and from USA and concerned with the L type Requirements: I have the written invitation letter and I know which flight I will take to China; however, do I really need to purchase the plane ticket before I apply for the L type? I don't want to get denied and get stuck with a $2000 plane ticket.
