You should apply for a L type. It requires your passport, filled 2013 application form and a recent passport photo. Besides, the round trip air tickets and hotel booking in PRC are rquired too if you can't provide the invitation letter required. By the way, the embassy might ask you to provide other documents, travel insurance for example, which should guarantee you have money to cover your expense in PRC.
