About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Kuala Lampur-Shanghai-Beijing-Washington DC

My entire trip occurs on one day. I leave KL AT 2:10AM on a flight to Beijing which has change of planes in Shanghai. I arrive in Beijing at 11:30 AM and depart at 6:45 PM for Washington DC. Will not leave the Shanghai or Beijing airports. Do I qualify for 72 hr. Transit visa in Shanghai and Beijing without applying for any sort of permit?

No, your itinerary does not apply to this 72 hr free transit. But according to your words above, the total stay in China is less than 24 hours, so you enjoy 24 hr free transit. That is to say, visa is not required as well.
