Can my family enter Vietnam from Yunnan Province?

We are visiting the Yunnan province near the Vietnam border, we have American passports with temporary residence visas in China. What is the easiest way to walk into Vietnam and visit just for the day?

I am afraid that both you and your wife need to apply for a tourist visa if you want to visit Vietnam from Yunnan Province. According to what I found on the internet, VOA or any other special types or visa exemption policy is not mentioned for the American people.
