About:China Visa Application in UK

Is a hotel room reservation mandatory to obtain a tourist visa?

I am a backpacker, flying to Hong Kong and intending to stay there for two weeks before continuing to Malaysia. I would like to visit mainland China for a couple of days meanwhile, but must I have a hotel room reservation from China before applying the L here in UK? I am a Finnish citizen.
