do we need to get a visa to leave the airport?

Hello,I have a round trip ticket (Japan > Shanghai > Kunming > Kathmandu) that has a 6 hour layover in Shanghai.  We're holding a USA and CANADA passports. Thanks!

You can apply for a free stay permit after arrival at the airport if you need to go out for sightseeing or staying in a hotel outside of the airport.
