About:China Transit Visa

South African passport holder traveling to Thailand. 16 hour layover in Shanghai.

I would like to tour the city for a few hours or so. Do i need a transit visa for this? Or am i guaranteed a Stay Permit if I apply at the airport?

Don't worry, you can get a stay permit at the airport providing your passport and flight ticket leaving within 24 hours. If necessary, you can confirm this with Shanghai airport directly via 0086-21-51105100.
