About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Does our shanghai stopover count for the 72 hour transit visit??

We are flying from Sydney to Shanghai, arriving Saturday night, booked on one ticket, then on another ticket we are flying Shanghai to Hong Kong on Tuesday morning... We are then flying elsewhere in Asia and eventually leaving from Bangkok back to Brisbane.

Hi Nate, you are advised to contact Shanghai airport directly for this. According to my experience, this is allowed as long as you have a flight ticket leaving within 72 hours.

Thanks so much for this help. Does it matter if we fly into one Shanghai airport and out of the other?

No, with the 72 hour free transit permit, you are not allowed to leave Shanghai. But it is ok if you leave from the other airport in Shanghai, for example, arrive at Pudong, then leave from Hongqiao.
