Complicated flight from Beijing to Hong Kong, would like to head to Guangzhou

I'm flying with a us passport to Hong Kong with a Beijing layover. I want to go up to Guangzhou for two days and one night from Hong Kong. Do I need a visa if there is a 72 free transit permit offer?

You need to apply for a Chinese visa if you visit Guangzhou from Hong Kong then back to Hong Kong agion. But if you fly from Hong Kong to USA via Guangzhou, you are eligible to use 72 hour free transit permit in Guangzhou.
